SOCS 309 Design Research & Methods – reflective interaction
Design research is a space for exploring design theory, processes and methods as reflective and reflexive practice. This survey of practice-based research and research-based practice focuses on the development of core knowledge and research skills that have direct relevance to current design practice and design studies. Students learn the methods and tactics used in the design disciplines to create people-centred products, communications, systems, and environments. Through assigned readings from the course text and course pack, lectures, discussions, fieldwork and individual and group learning activities, students gain valuable knowledge that is directly applicable to practicing and studying design.
Course assignments are: an illustrated team presentation of an assigned reading (20 slides in 10 minutes @ 1500 words), a critically written media review of an assigned reading (500 – 750 words using APA style), an abstract (150 -200 words) for a praxis paper on your design process, and a journal article on that design process with relevant diagrams, illustrations, photographs, citations and reference list (1800 words using CHI style).
