It is with profound sadness and regret that I inform you of the passing of Ray Hrynkow, FGDC, my husband and partner of 36 years, and alumnus of Emily Carr University of Art and Design.

Not only was Ray a graduate Emily Carr, but a champion for design and design education in Canada. A recipient of over 200 national and international awards for design, Ray advocated for design and its role in Canadian business and culture. He was a leader in the profession in Canada. Ray knew that Canada was made greater through the work of its communication designers. He spoke and wrote frequently about design’s role in growing our economy and cultural awareness. He was principal of Herrainco Brand Strategy and Design from 1986 until his death March 23, 2012.

Ray was made a Fellow of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada in 2011 in recognition of his profound influence on the British Columbia design community. His commitment to design, best professional practices and community support were a major factor contributing to the sum of the GDC as a profession and as a Society as a whole. He loved Emily Carr University and its work in producing thinking designers. In honour of that love, in late 2011 he created the Ray Hrynkow Scholarship is to be awarded to a third year student in a four-year design degree program. The award will go to a candidate showing great promise as a “thinking” designer — one who demonstrates an understanding of sociology and anthropology in their work.

Ray loved communication design, design in general, and Emily Carr. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

The following is copied from the ECIDA, see the link below for more!

SOS is a new blog series brought to you by the ECIDA, to expose emerging sustainable ideas of the Emily Carr student body.

“COMPOST-NOW: Because Karma’s A Bitch”

Jacqueline Tollington is in her 4th year of the Industrial Design program. Currently Jacqueline is approaching the halfway mark in developing her 2012 grad project. She has initiated a composting system suitable for cities transitioning into the composting lifestyle. The system design titled Compost-Now includes a new composting bin, personal food waste storage container and a marketing campaign.

Jacqueline Tollington

ECIDA: What is the mission for Compost-Now?

JACQUELINE: My design intends to offer an accessible and attractive composting option for residents of the downtown core of Vancouver.

E: This is quite an admirable goal. How do you envision this system to work?

J: The system I am working with allows Vancouver residents to drop off food wastes at conveniently placed local grocery stores, where they are later picked up by the City of Vancouver and transported to a composting facility. After being fully composted into nutrient-rich soil, the compost can be sold at grocery stores and local farms.

E: I understand a grocery drop off location could save in excess transportation—especially since people frequently make trips for groceries—but what can you say about private pick-up?

J: Currently, Vancouver offers a compost pickup program in the form of bin pickup at private single unit residences. However, the implementation of this service to multi-unit residences is yet to take place and there’s only talk that it could be available in the next few years. Compost-Now provides an immediate solution for the composting of food wastes until a longer-term bin pickup program can be employed, while also providing the option of becoming permanent.

Compost-Now System Map

E: Final question: Given your research so far, where did you find your biggest insight(s)?

J: While volunteering at the West End Drop Spot to support local composting initiatives, I realized both product and communication design opportunities. For example, the composting bins are very inefficient because they do not provide a flat surface for people to place and open their waste containers. I’ve also witnessed additional hassles as a result of poor container design.

The composting programs are particularly diluted with generic green promotional material. I believe if the marketing aesthetics were catered to a more targeted audience, such as a more updated, ethnographic group prevalent in the city, there could be more people interested in such a topic. My audience of choice is identifiable as young and alternative. I am thereby attempting to market more inclusively, reaching a wider and less informed audience.

~End~

Thank you for participating this week Jacqueline. We look forward to the outcomes of Compost-Now.

Featured below are a selection of process books from a 3rd year CORE project that had students collaborate with the Museum of Vancouver to produce concepts for an Augmented Reality App to coincide with their Neon Vancouver/Ugly Vancouver exhibit. The student teams were assigned different neon signs from Vancouver’s neon heyday, some that still exist on the streets of Vancouver, and some that have long since retired, and now reside in the MOV collection. They chose different ways of making the signs, as well as the history of Vancouver come alive.

How Kickstarter Works

Our Simple Formula

Kickstarter is a new form of commerce and patronage. In our world, the best way to inspire support is to offer people great rewards. Everyone loves limited editions, one-of-a-kinds, and fun experiences (parties, screenings, balloon rides!). Spend some time brainstorming your rewards and people will respond. No one needs another coffee mug.

Why is Kickstarter funding all-or-nothing?

On Kickstarter, a project must reach its funding goal before time runs out or no money changes hands. Why? It protects everyone involved. This way, no one is expected to develop a project with an insufficient budget, which sucks. Remember you set your own funding goal, so aim to raise the minimum amount you’ll need to create your vision. Projects can always raise more than their goal, and often do.

My second post for the ELIA conference:

_____________________________

Today began with a presentation by Meredith Davis, where she provided many details about her institutions approach to design education. Meredith explained how mapping is a tool that is as important for today’s design student as drawing, as we are able to better understand the problem space before work begins. She saw managing complexity as the essence of design, and called for greater collaborative activity in design education to meet the changing needs of the design student of the 21st Century.

At our round table discussion, there were many opinions, and I was often asked for my opinion and understanding of different issues, so it was a great opportunity to speak and share with a group of amazing people.

Some voices at the table were concerned that if the design curriculum becomes too streamlined and prescribed, it would lose much of its abstractness, and ignore it’s rich history. Others explained their frustration over the amount of say industry and unions have over their design curriculum, but everyone seemed to be on the same page when it came to the fact that they were all interested in how they could meet (and exceed) the needs of today’s student.

We questioned the relationship between design and other disciplines, and called for more collaboration. We also touched on how to deal with students demanding a greater depth of knowledge in some areas and a broad reach over others as well. Should students be able to focus in on one area? Should there be a dual curriculum offered? Is there enough room for students to reflect on their process? These are all hard questions, and certainly require more time that we were allowed for today to answer in full – if an answer can even be found!

When we started to talk about students being advocates of education, I began to wonder if students were being provided with the skills they needed to think and write critically. I kicked myself for not asking Meredith how her school teaches students to express their opinions on the changes design is undergoing. Sitting here now, I wonder who will be the Meredith Davis of tomorrow, who will bring in a new form of co-creation, a new tool kit, a new version of the T-shaped designer, and what will these things look like in the next 5-10 years? Perhaps that is a question for the next ELIA conference…
